You Are Here: Home » Technology » Error 651 with PPPoE connections in Windows 7

In windows 7, when you try to connect using your PPPoE connections, you may be faced with the following error:

Error 651: The Modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error.

These connections would work just fine with Windows XP or Windows Vista PCs.

Again, you are not alone, this seems to be a known bug in Windows 7 that is being worked at. However, you can workaround this problem.

The RAS PPPoE driver file “raspppoe.sys” found under c:\windows\system32\drivers folder seems to be the root cause of the problem. Fortunately, we can workaround the problem simply by renaming the original raspppoe.sys file to something like “raspppoe_orig.sys” copying a working file from a Windows Vista system. If you do not have access to a Windows Vista system.

click here to download raspppoe.sys file (unzip).

This should help!

I did the above and my modem has stopped functioning. There is a yellow exclamation in device manager over the modem driver.

Can someone post me the original raspppoe.sys file as I deleted mine and now the modem does not work.

    Thanks

Sometimes you need to reboot your system twice. Don`t know why.

Apparently there are a number of things that can cause a “651″ error. In my case it was happening because I had forgotten to add my mac address to the list of approved mac addresses maintained in the router. I have a Belkin, and the address for accessing it online is 192.168.10.1. I went into “mac address filtering” in the firewall section and added the mac address of my new computer. To make changes you will have to enter your password. At one time you, or someone on your behalf would have had to do this with your old computer, but if you are like me after a month or two you forget. In case you have forgotten, you find the mac address by going into DOS and entering “ipconfig/all”.

I fixed this problem by one or all of these selecting automatic detect settings, changing static IP to assign an IP, disabling Bonjour service. Making sure “never dial” was selected

I did not replace the raspppoe.sys file.

I have tried this and no it doesn't work. Do I take it that there are thousands of people out there with Windows 7 PCs who just can't get onto the Internet? Is there any way of downgrading the OS back to Vista?

Didn't help me… done everything correctly, oh and it asked for administrator rights to modify/edit/delete files in drives.folder , so I had to use cmd : net user administrator /active:yes , and log as an administrator, and then it still told me about “you don't have permission to do that” , so I right click the folder > properties .. and set my rights to the MAX… and ways… I've replaced my raspppoe.sys with the one I downloaded from here, and still didn't help.

i'm in the same boat as ALEXX. I don't know what to do from here. Some people say remove Virtual PC 2007, but it doesn't seem to be installed on my system. I'm waiting for a MS fix. :(

    It works well

  • Bushjrusa

just use CMD in your system and right click, run it with adm. right, then type “sfc /scannow”,what you need to do is to wait. The system itself will fix and recover the correct file.
