Micron preps 256 GB SSDs for notebooks

Boise (ID) – Micron announced a new generation of its RealSSD flash disk drives for server and notebook applications Capacities are now hitting 256 GB, but the real questions appears to be pricing and not storage space.

Micron’s new drives will come in two flavors, the P200 for servers and the C200 for notebooks. The server models will range from 16 GB to 128 GB in size in a 2.5” form factor. Micron claims that the P200 will be more than 10 times faster at accessing transactional data when compared to a typical enterprise HDD. It is promised to hit a sub-millisecond latency while a typical enterprise HDD has an average latency of approximately 8 milliseconds.

Intel in low-key launch for next generation wireless chip

IntelIntel, the world’s top PC chip maker, on Tuesday launched the next-generation of its Centrino wireless chip that it hopes will provide a new revenue stream amid a broader push into mobile technologies.

The launch of the Centrino 2 chip, previously code named Montevina, came after a delay of several months and was decidedly lower key than the launch of the first Centrino chips in 2003. The next generation chipset combines wi-fi capability, which is only usable within about 100 meters of so-called “hot-spot” transmitters, with a newer wireless technology called WiMax, which allows for high-speed data transmission over much bigger distances and can be used to blanket entire cities.

Nvidia whacked over defective notebook chips; Offers driver to keep processors cool

NvidiaUpdated: Nvidia said its fiscal second quarter revenue will fall well short of targets because of weak demand, pricing pressure from AMD’s ATI and a faulty graphics processors on older notebook systems. In an SEC filing, the company said it is offering a driver that keeps fans running to relieve stress on the faulty chips in the field.

The company said after the bell Thursday that second quarter revenue is expected to by $875 million to $950 million (statement, Techmeme). The company reported first quarter revenue of $1.15 billion and was projecting the second quarter to be a seasonally average one with a revenue decline of about 5 percent to $1.09 billion. Wall Street was expecting second quarter earnings of 34 cents a share.

DellDell has released a new line of notebooks aimed at multimedia creators and connoisseurs.The Studio laptops will sport a number of features designed for high-end multimedia users, such as an optional blu-ray drive and a high-resolution 17-inch screen.

The new notebooks will also sport Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.5ghz and offer the option of up to 3GB of memory and a 256MB ATI Radeon graphics card. Dell hopes that the Studio line will appeal to users who lead what the company calls “high-def mobile lifestyles.”

AMD Prowls For Notebook Wins With Puma

Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) is showcasing its new notebook platform at the Computex show in Taipei, Taiwan and on Wednesday announced the availability of a new dual-core Turion mobile processor and a new 7-series chipset optimized for mobility as part of the product launch codenamed Puma.The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip maker’s next-generation mobile platform launch comes as AMD’s main x86 rival Intel recently announced that its own highly anticipated new notebook platform, codenamed Montevina, has been delayed from a late June launch to mid-summer due to technical issues with the Intel (NSDQ:INTC) 4 Series Express chipset and a separate certification hang-up the basic Wi-Fi chip included in the newly-branded Centrino 2 platform.

Intel Cites Graphics Problems In Centrino 2 Delay

 Intel (NSDQ: INTC) on Wednesday said a problem with the integrated graphics controller that assists a computer’s microprocessor in rendering video and other graphics prompted the chipmaker to delay the release of the Centrino 2 mobile platform until mid-July.Intel on Tuesday said the new platform would ship July 14 instead of June, which is when it was expected. Centrino 2 includes Intel’s 45-nanometer Core 2 processor, formerly code-named Penryn.
The flawed integrated graphics controller was in the GM45/GM47 chipsets available with the new platform. The IGC’s purpose is to off-load graphics rendering from the CPU and is typically used in computers that don’t need the higher level of power delivered through separate graphics cards from companies like Nvidia or Advanced Micro Devices’ ATI unit.
