A record number of 5000 students of the Punjab University, out of a total of 27,000 pursuing higher studies at under graduate and post graduate courses, are being given merit and need-based scholarships. Vice Chancellor PU, Prof Dr. Mujahid Kamran said here Sunday that fifty per cent students have been given merit scholarships ,while the remaining were given need-based support. “All these scholarships are being given by the university from its own resources–without any funding either from government or public or private sectors”, the VC observed.
He said that for the first time ever,39 faculty members of various teaching departments were pursuing higher studies leading to PhD in internationally recognized universities under PU sponsorship scheme. “Special emphasis was given to conducting international standard research by all teachers in their relevant academic fields”. The VC lauded that brilliant students of PU, within a short span of 4 months, won 65 gold and silver medals in various international and national declamation contests. PU is the only public sector university in the country which is offering master level education in more than 62 subjects while charging affordable fee but showing excellent academic results.
Dr. Mujahid said students of PU Law College also excelled in international contest held in USA and clinched the first position. He informed that all vacant seats of the Professors, Associate Professor, Assistant Professors and Lecturers and non-academic staff were being filled in through selection boards. The VC said some groups, with vested interest, were critical of him for defeating their nefarious designs. He vowed not to deviate from merit as he strictly believes in rule of law and discipline,as well as healthy and peaceful atmosphere on the campus. App
