The dawn of intelligent machines

Tue, 26th August, 2008 - Posted by Muhammad Hanif - (1) Comment

The idea may scare some, but Intel predicts that by 2050 machines could surpass the peak of human intelligence.

So predicted Justin Rattner, chief technology officer at the chip maker, in a presentation at the Intel Developer Forum which examined how technology is expected to bridge the gap between man and machine.

The vision included sensitive robots and shape-shifting materials.

“There is no question that one of the most likely things that will happen in the next 40 years is that machine and human intelligence will come much closer together,” Mr Rattner told the BBC.

“The ability of humans to communicate with machines and for machines to communicate with humans will get so much better.”

Airlines Compete to Offer Web Surfing in the Skies

Wireless Internet access is about to move out of coffee shops and airport lounges and into airplanes.

Delta is trying to outmaneuver rival JetBlue, known for outfitting planes with satellite TV, and American Airlines, which is planning to launch Internet service later this year. Other airlines, including Continental, Southwest and Virgin America, are planning tests or have them underway.

Enterprise organizations must take note of the Kaminsky DNS flaw

Fri, 1st August, 2008 - Posted by Mursalin - (0) Comment

If you haven’t heard about the current DNS vulnerability, here is a Reader’s Digest-like summary. Security guru Dan Kaminsky found a vulnerability that could give the bad guys a relatively easy way to redirect Internet traffic. For example: You might think you are logging on to Bank of America’s Web site. But instead, some hacker may have just exploited a domain name system vulnerability and is now in control of your identity.

Kaminsky deserves credit for finding this flaw and alerting the Internet community so it could fix the problem. This effort is well under way, but according to an article in yesterday’s New York Times, Kaminsky believes that 41 percent of all DNS servers are still vulnerable, meaning that no one has patched these systems with new software that closes this gaping security hole.
