Cisco Systems warned that a sharp drop in sales could push revenue down by as much as 10 percent. The computer networking giant, the first major technology company to report financial results that include October, when the credit crisis spread beyond financial companies, said Wednesday that its sales fell by 9 percent in the month, compared to a year earlier.
Cisco expects sales for its current quarter to drop 5 to 10 percent from the $9.8 billion reported in the same period last year.
“The environment has changed dramatically in the last two months,” John T. Chambers, Cisco’s chief executive, said in a conference with Wall Street analysts.

With DNS so vital to the operation of the Internet, security threats to it need to be taken seriously. But when it comes to the recent disclosure of a multivendor DNS cache poisoning issue, who really is at risk? And will the Internet collapse if the issue isn’t fixed?
Experts say that while the new DNS cache poisoning issue is very serious, DNS has been threatened before — and the core structure of the Internet name servers remains ready for such challenges.
“This is the type of attack against DNS that we anticipated years ago would be theoretically possible,” VeriSign CTO Ken Silva told InternetNews.com. “And this is not the first instance of cache poisoning that has been reported, as there were similar issues in the late 90’s.”

Consumers in the not-too-distant future are going to expect more mobile bandwidth than today’s 3G networks are capable of providing, and Intel intends to ensure the upcoming demand for additional capacity is met with WiMAX-powered 4G networks. As part of that initiative, Intel, Clearwire, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Samsung, and Sprint collectively announced the formation of the Open Patent Alliance (OPA) today. The purpose of the organization is to “advance a competitive and open intellectual property rights model, thus stimulating a larger WiMAX industry that supports innovation through broader choice and lower equipment and service costs for WiMAX technology, devices and applications globally.”

Study Confirms Growth in Demand for Managed Metro Ethernet, Virtual Private Network, Voice and Security Services
SAN JOSE, Calif. Cisco announced the latest results of a multi-year market study of the global adoption of managed IT and communication services. The study, performed by Ovum and commissioned by Cisco as part of its on-going commitment to enabling service providers, confirmed that businesses are increasingly looking to managed service providers for managed metro Ethernet, managed Internet Protocol (IP) Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), managed IP voice and managed security. The report notes that the market for these managed IP-based services continues to see strong growth at a current compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18 percent over the forecast period and is expected to deliver revenues of US $66 billion by 2012.
